Crysencio Summerville’s 95th-minute extra-time winner saw ten-men West Ham scrape past Burton Albion in a 1-0 FA Cup victory at the Pirelli Stadium.
Summerville curled in a 95th-minute deflected winner to settle a low-quality contest at the Pirelli Stadium.
West Ham however finished a man down after Freddie Potts was shown a 101st-minute red card after he brought down Julian Larsson.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s Hammers will now feature in the fifth round draw which will take place at 6:35pm GMT on Monday 16 February, live on TNT Sports 1 in the UK.
Having made ten changes from their 1-1 draw against Manchester United in the Premier League last Tuesday (10 February), West Ham were lucky not to concede a ninth-minute penalty after Konstantinos Mavropanos fouled Jake Beesley but referee – Lewis Smith ignored the hosts’ penalty appeals.
Burton continued to look the more attacking team but were forced into a 32nd-minute change after loanee, Sebastian Revan suffered a hamstring injury, which saw him replaced by Sibbick.
West Ham meanwhile carved out their own chances of little quality aside from the 39th minute as Callum Wilson cut along the box, before the England striker’s curled effort was saved by Bradley Collins as neither team broke the deadlock before half time.
Espirito Santo’s Hammers subsequently turned up the intensity in the second half but struggled to break down Burton’s resilient low block tactics, as Mavropanos headed a 56th-minute corner into Collins’ arms but the Brewsters held out to force extra time.
Burton’s resistance eventually was broken in the fifth minute of extra time after Mayers teed up Summerville on the left, from which the winger cut in from the left and curled into the top right corner via a deflection from the foot of Kegs Chauke.
West Ham however were reduced to ten men in the 101st minute after Potts recklessly fouled Larsson from behind, which left Lewis Smith no option other than to red card the youngster once he assessed the scene.
Jack Armer fired wide across goal as Burton nearly got back level before the extra-time break before Beesley and Kyran Lofthouse too put chances wide, whilst Chauke found the side-netting.
The Brewsters ultimately couldn’t find an equaliser as they missed out on a first fifth-round appearance in this competition.
